Step back in time to the rugged beginnings of the Talbot Settlement. This engaging presentation explores the 1850s transition from wilderness to empire, centered on the historic Backus-Page House Museum. Discover the daily lives of Tyrconnell's pioneers—from the ambitious building of the Georgian brick homestead to the bustling Talbot Settlement community on Lake Erie's cliffs. Learn how the Backus family and Colonel Talbot shaped the landscape of southwestern Ontario.
We especially welcome the families and descendants of those who were part of the original save-the-station effort. So many of the people who gave their time, voices, and determination to this cause are no longer with us, and this event is as much a tribute to them as it is a celebration of the building they saved. If your family has a connection to the Glencoe Station restoration story, we would love to see you there. A list honouring those involved, including many who have since passed, is being compiled and will be shared in the future.
Join us for a celebration of Robert Burns Day (Burns Night), honouring the life and poetry of Scotland's national bard. We'll mark the occasion with a traditional wee Burns Supper featuring haggis, neeps, and tatties, accompanied by a Scotch tasting.
Dr. Dove will bring this history to life, drawing on his research and his forthcoming documentary, Packaging Fun: London's O-Pee-Chee Company. He'll speak to the significance of Glencoe's own O-Pee-Chee ghost sign — confirmed by Dr. Dove himself as authentic O-Pee-Chee signage, and, by his estimation, among the largest of only a handful still surviving in Canada, making the case for its preservation as a rare and important piece of regional heritage.
Join us on March 1st, 2026 to commemorate the Battle of Longwoods which was originally fought on March 4th 1814.
Arrive at 1:45 p.m. and park carefully. Battle Hill National Historic Site, 2945 Longwoods Rd, Glencoe, ON N0L 1M0
We will remember those injured and killed at the Battle of the Longwoods in 1814.
