  • Willey Cemetery Commemoration Ceremony

    On Sunday, July 26, the Glencoe & District Historical Society joined the Municipality of Southwest Middlesex, the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, and over 60 guests at Willey Cemetery to formally designate the site as a United Empire Loyalist Burial Ground and to unveil commemorative plaques honouring Corporal John Phillips, UEL, and his son, Sergeant Peter Phillips, UE.

    The afternoon opened with piper Rob Easton's prelude and the singing of "O Canada," followed by an Indigenous land acknowledgement from GDHS President Norm McGill and welcomes from Southwest Middlesex Mayor Allan Mayhew, Middlesex County Warden Susan Clark, and UELAC London Branch President Carol Childs, who brought greetings on behalf of the national Association and formally recognized Willey Cemetery as a Loyalist Burial Site.

  • A Night of Reflection: An Event in Honour of Truth & Reconciliation

    An evening of reflection, remembrance, learning and community. There will be Indigenous elders, a residential school Survivor, and the dancers of the Sweet Labour Art Collective for this deeply moving and meaningful gathering.

  • Oct 22: Love Hate Whisk(e)y: A Family Saga

    Glencoe Public Library 123 McKellar St., Glencoe, Ontario, Canada

    Valrita Fournier is a multi-talented playwright, poet, mystic, novelist, composer, and master of ceremonies. A graduate of the University of Toronto with a degree in English Language and Literature, she won first prize in a one-act play competition with her comedic work Eggs-Actly My Dear!.

    Though not a musician by training, Valrita has organized musical and theatrical events at numerous venues including Place Concorde, Mackenzie Hall, WEDS Theatre, church halls, wedding stages, and even a Women’s Day whiskey-tasting book talk at a distillery restaurant.

  • Oct 31 – Nov 1 “Lawrence Station” Play

    Four performances.  Two venues.   On the 85th anniversary of the crash of American Airlines Flagship Erie in Lawrence Station, ON, the story of its final flight where local residents rushed to rescue the 17 passengers and 3 crew members aboard. At the time, it was Canada’s worst aviation disaster. This music-infused play explores the lives forever changed by the tragic final flight of the Flagship Erie.

This engaging presentation explores the 1850s transition from wilderness to empire, centered on the historic Backus-Page House Museum. Discover the daily lives of Tyrconnell's pioneers—from the ambitious building of the Georgian brick homestead to the bustling Talbot Settlement community on Lake Erie's cliffs. Learn how the Backus family and Colonel Talbot shaped the landscape of southwestern Ontario.
